Mere Calvinism

Awhile back, we decided to always have a book available on the doctrines of grace (aka 'Calvinism'). To determine what we should carry, I spend the next couple weeks reading all the books I could find on the topic. Sproul, Storms, Boettner, MacArthur, Palmer, Steele, Murray and more

Responding to the Immigration Conflict as Christians

Responding to the Immigration Conflict as Christians

My wife heard about it first via email. The next day I began to receive emails from people locally and as far as Iowa. They wanted to know if we would be joining them on the picket line. They wanted to know how we as a church would show the

I Don't Want to Go to Heaven!

I Don't Want to Go to Heaven!

Those were the words of Abby, my 4-year-old girl, the other night. “I don’t want to go to heaven.” Yes, she is enslaved to sin at this early age. Yes, she is sincere in her words. And the why is not that much different from many adults

Don’t Confuse Justification and Sanctification

Don’t Confuse Justification and Sanctification

If you’re part of FBC, you hear this all the time — God’s people are called to a lifestyle of obedience (John 3:36). Jesus “became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation” (Hebrews 5:9). Sure, believers may disobey God for a time, but

Evaluating Your Day

Evaluating Your Day

As multiple people have asked me for this, I thought it might be easiest to post it here. What follows is the segment from the sermon this last Sunday that considers how each part of our day requires enslaving your body to a greater ambition than self-interest.

"Why I Would Die for South Africa"

One of the unique blessings of graduate school is the friendships & aquaintances that develop during your time there. During the first year of my seminary experience, I got to know Tim Cantrell. Tim and his family now minister in Honeyridge, South Africa, where he pastors at Honeyridge Baptist Church.

The Guy on the Corner

The Guy on the Corner

If you were in Temecula today around 5:45pm, you may have seen the guy with the guitar on the corner of Margarita and Winchester. I actually shut off my audiobook and rolled down my windows to hear him. There he stood, playing, shouting and singing… The sum of his

Edwards & Young Christians

Edwards & Young Christians

Jonathan Edwards is arguably known as the foremost American theologian. The style & content of his writings betray the depth of his mind, and can at times even overwhelm the reader. Less realized is his unswerving concern for the growth of young believers. A small pamphlet has been published by

Translation Challenges

Translation Challenges

In America, we have the blessing of a plethora of Bible translations to help us get at the original meaning and/or to clarify when we don’t understand a particular phrase or word. In other areas of the world, it is not so. Consider this quote from the introduction

The Blessing of Adoption

The Blessing of Adoption

A number of families at FBC have chosen to adopt and I know of no family that regrets this decision. The sister-in-law of someone in our church just adopted a cute little Chinese girl named Sadie Mei. For her friends and extended family, she’s been keeping a

Pray without Ceasing

At The Master’s Seminary, one of the required classes for every student is a class on prayer. From the seminary’s inception until this year, I believe that it has been taught by Dr. Rosscup, who does a mean Columbo impersonation, and writes Western novels under the pen-name

Death by Caffeine

Death by Caffeine

Starbucks Coffee has been called “Christian crack.” Evidenced by the number of professing Christians typically meeting there, it is surely the new ‘drug’ of choice among believers.
